XviD streams prior to build0000 (ie up to and including 0.9 stable series) with non-multiples of 16 are not MPEG-4 compliant and exhibit occasional glitches. There is no work-around
NVops (not coded PVops) can be used to more efficiently represent dropped frames or frames which are identical to the previous frame. NVops are not correctly handled by the QuickTime MPEG-4 Stream hinter and will cause a -5402 error when attempting to hint a file which contains NVops. The solution is to not use NVop coding. The 3ivx DirectShow Media Muxer can be used to remove NVops from an already coded bitstream. (This is currently still an issue with QT6.5)
QT Codec
QuickTime 7's native datarate setting is now in kilobits/sec. There are 1000 bits in a kilobit, and 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, according to the
QuickTime Player. Due to a work-around for an error in QT7's kilobit->byte conversion, third party applications which do not use the QT7 codec
selection dialog to obtain a datarate from the user (in kilobits/sec) may end up undershooting by a factor 1.024 (roughly 2.5%). In order to
correct for this multiply the datarate you enter into affected applications by 1.024. This is only an issue when using QT7
Win QT Codec
When one movie has two or more video tracks, each encoded with 3ivx there may be problems playing the video when DirectDraw Acceleration
is enabled in the QuickTime settings control panel. Work-arounds, disable DirectDraw acceleration, or DirectDraw
Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.2 crashes when loading the 3ivx QT Codec. There is a work-around available, simply rename the CompilerQuicktime.prm'
file to 'zCompilerQuicktime.prm'. The file is located at 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0\Plug-ins\en_US\"

Bink is a hybrid block-transform and wavelet codec that can encode your video using 16 different compression techniques (wavelet, DCT, motion
compensation, a variety of vector quantizers, Smacker-style, etc). With all of these techniques in one codec, Bink can handle any type of video.
Bink also has a VBR psycho-acoustic based audio codec that is capable of 8:1 up to 20:1 perceptually lossless compression, so your audio will sound
as good as your video looks. Other video codecs force you to license a separate audio encoder, but Bink has one built right in!
Another nice feature of Bink is that it's technology was completely independently developed. We are not based on any MPEG or other
committee standards (our techniques are quite different, in fact) of any kind, so the IP is safe, encumbrance-free, and (best of all)
entirely royalty free. That's why we develop our own codecs (both video and audio) - we don't want to be hindered by any third parties
who see games as a side market rather than the target market. RAD has been developing video codecs for games since 1992 - our software
codecs were being used before MPEG could even be played on a PC without a hardware decoder card.
The other big reason that we develop our own codec technology is because general video codecs are just not designed for games. They are designed
to play movies in a nice little media player sandbox on a PC with little else going on. They use a ton of memory (Bink uses up to 16 MB less than
other codecs), and they use almost all of the CPU. Bink is designed just for games - we aren't trying to be a media player for the masses, or get
integrated into some set top box, or stream video off the internet. Our only goal is great looking, easy to use, high performance video for your

A new attempt to provide a higher-end sequel to the ubiquitous JPEG image standard is officially under way.
The multiple countries participating in the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created the JPEG standard, have approved an effort to
make Microsoft's HD Photo format a standard called JPEG XR, said Bill Crow, who has led Microsoft's HD Photo effort and who just took over
the company's Microsoft Live Labs Seadragon imaging project. XR stands for "extended range," a reference to the format's ability to show a
wider and finer range of tonal gradations and a richer color palette.
"The country vote is done, and it passed," Crow said. "That means the International JPEG committee has decided to go ahead and create the
standard. Now it's just a process of doing that work," a process that will begin later this month in a meeting in Kobe, Japan.
The move is an important step in the transformation of the photo format from an in-house technology called Windows Media Photo to a neutral
format more likely to be palatable to companies that don't want to be beholden to Microsoft.
However, the move also means that Microsoft will have to be more patient with its hopes to get HD Photo to catch on more broadly.
Standardization "typically takes around a year," Crow said.
The wait is worth it, said Josh Weisberg, director of digital imaging evangelism for Microsoft's Rich Media Group.
"As much as I would love to have more support for it, I think it's logical for people to wait for there to be a standardized version of it,"
he said. "If we weren't going through the standardization process, we'd be pushing much harder for people to support it."
In Microsoft's view, HD Photo also offers better compression and support for in-camera image processing. It's built into Windows Vista, but
Microsoft offers the software development kit to implement the technology free and with no royalty constraints. Image-editing powerhouse
Adobe Systems has voiced support for the format.

Bink is a hybrid block-transform and wavelet codec that can encode your video using 16 different compression techniques (wavelet, DCT, motion
compensation, a variety of vector quantizers, Smacker-style, etc). With all of these techniques in one codec, Bink can handle any type of video.
Bink also has a VBR psycho-acoustic based audio codec that is capable of 8:1 up to 20:1 perceptually lossless compression, so your audio will sound
as good as your video looks. Other video codecs force you to license a separate audio encoder, but Bink has one built right in!
Another nice feature of Bink is that it's technology was completely independently developed. We are not based on any MPEG or other
committee standards (our techniques are quite different, in fact) of any kind, so the IP is safe, encumbrance-free, and (best of all)
entirely royalty free. That's why we develop our own codecs (both video and audio) - we don't want to be hindered by any third parties
who see games as a side market rather than the target market. RAD has been developing video codecs for games since 1992 - our software
codecs were being used before MPEG could even be played on a PC without a hardware decoder card.
The other big reason that we develop our own codec technology is because general video codecs are just not designed for games. They are designed
to play movies in a nice little media player sandbox on a PC with little else going on. They use a ton of memory (Bink uses up to 16 MB less than
other codecs), and they use almost all of the CPU. Bink is designed just for games - we aren't trying to be a media player for the masses, or get
integrated into some set top box, or stream video off the internet. Our only goal is great looking, easy to use, high performance video for your
games.

Lagarith is a lossless video codec intended for editing and archiving. Lagarith offers
better compression than codecs like Huffyuv, Alparysoft, and CorePNG. There are a few lossless codecs that can compress better than Lagarith,
such as MSU and FFV1; however Lagarith tends to be faster and stabler than these codecs. Lagarith is able to operate in several colorspaces -
RGB24, RGB32, RGBA, YUY2, and YV12. For DVD video, the compression is typically only 10-30% better than Huffyuv.

FLAC 1.2.1b released - Lossless audio compression technology

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless,
meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much
better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or
your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file.
FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and the only one that at once is non-proprietary, is
unencumbered by patents, has an open-source reference implementation, has a well documented format and API, and has several other
independent implementations.

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based PCs an ideal platform for running and displaying
applications rich in multimedia elements such as full- color graphics, 3D animation, video and rich audio.
DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be
accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.
SIF is a universal video codec of a new generation. It is integrated into the operational system,
which allows its use in any program for editing and viewing video. In compression, a new compression algorithm that has no analogs and
our own original psychovisual model adaptive to local image fragments are used. This codec is optimized for efficient compression of
video of a high and average resolution, which results in a high quality of images at a bit rate lower than 1 megabits in compression
of 720x576 DVD video.
Description of codec settings. Quantization level is the main parameter. Its increase leads to a higher level of image compression. As the quantization level decreases,
the image quality increases and eventually becomes lossless (to be more exact, nearly lossless) if this parameter is set to zero. Of note, the
SIF1 codec is not suited for this regime and will become slow and less efficient than specialized lossless codecs.
Сolor quantization scaling defines the ratio between quantization levels for brightness and color image components. An increase in this
parameter leads to a higher quantization level for the color components relative the brightness ones.
If this parameter is set to maximum, the quantization level of color components becomes three times as high as the current quantization level
of brightness components.
Additional quantizer. While an increase in the level of the main quantizer reduces the quantity of the remaining image details, the level
of the additional quantizer determines the accuracy of transmission of the remaining details. A higher level results in a coarser transmission.
The additional quantizer exerts a much weaker influence on the final image compression degree than the main quantizer.
Maximum I-frame interval is the maximum distance between two neighboring key frames. The codec is able to automatically detect the scene
change and insert the key frames where necessary.
